What is the Benefit of a NACQJ Comment Sheet?
The comments your quilt receives from a NACQJ certified quilt judge should be understandable and should be based upon established design principles and workmanship criteria. The judges’ comments focus both on the aspects of the quilt that are well-done and those which could be improved. These comments should lead the entrant to consider how to improve their future work. The judge will state the effects produced by the choices the quilt maker has made, and the quilt maker will determine whether these effects were intentional. Upon reading these comments, the quilt-maker should gain confidence in his/her skills.
The entrant can expect to learn whether the quilt is square, flat, and hangs well; whether the piecing, applique, surface design, and quilting techniques are mastered; and whether the edges are finished neatly. The entrant can expect to learn whether the design elements are in good proportion and if the quilt has strong visual impact. The entrant can expect to learn if the value plan works and whether the design is well-developed and unified. Additionally, the entrant may learn where the viewer’s eye is drawn, if the negative space is as interesting as the positive space, and whether the quilting design truly enhances the imagery or patchwork.
The entrant should expect to receive comments that are informative and will guide them forward on their quilt making journey.
